The Bible tells us that Jesus was like us “in all things but sin.” We see his humanity so clearly at the end of John 6. St. John tells us that people stopped following Jesus after he told them “my flesh is true food, my blood is real drink.” You can hear the heartbreak in his voice as he turns to his closest friends, to the twelve, and asks them, “Will you also leave?” Their reply must have caused his very human heart to leap with you. “Lord, to whom shall we do? You have the words of eternal life.” In our prayer today, let us join our own emotions, the ups and the downs, to the human heart of Jesus.
