In a recent interview a member of the administration was asked if some of their actions didn’t violate the vision of the founding fathers. His answer: those men lived 250 years ago and we are in a new situation today. Why should we listen to them? That is a particularly modern and American response. In most cultures, and certainly in the Bible, knowing where you came from is essential to knowing who you are. Moses invokes the memory of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — dead for 450 years — in his defense of the people. Jesus reminds the people of Moses who had lived 1250 years before him. We as Christians, of course, remember Jesus who lived and died 2000 years ago. The Biblical lesson: to know who you are, you must know how you got here. In our prayer today let’s recall our own story of faith and see how it fits into the larger picture of God’s saving actions throughout history.
