When I was a lad and there was one piece of pie left my mother would say to my sister and me, “One of you cut it into two pieces and the other choose which piece you want.” Believe me, that was one precision cut, exactly in half. It was only fair. One of the most damning accusations a child can hurl: “That’s not fair.” Certainly fairness is a value… but not one of the most important divine attributes. In fact, God is not fair, God is generous. There is no tit for tat with God as if so much effort gets so much grace. Rather, God wishes to bestow on us blessings beyond what we deserve. Our role is to be open to receive God’s gift.
