Jeremiah rejects the Pollyanna view proposed by Hananiah. The actions of Israel will have consequences. Sin will work itself out. But Jeremiah is not all gloom and doom. He offers a message of hope as well. Even though there is some suffering to get through in order to chastise the people (the Biblical version of “no pain, no gain”) suffering does not get the last word. God continues to love the Chosen People and will once again renew the divine relationship and shower blessings upon them. In our lives we must be people of hope. Often when we are going through a difficult period we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. God’s promise provides the blessed assurance that after the night, dawn comes.
