“Thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should not shepherds, rather, pasture sheep?” This word from the prophet Ezekiel coming while the Church in the US is reeling again with news of clergy sex abuse serves as an indictment. But in a strange way it also is consoling. It serves as a reminder that “the shepherds,” those who lead the Church must constantly be attentive to their reformation, to their closer walk with Jesus. This is not a new in our age but needed throughout the ages. St. Augustine said: What I am for you terrifies me. What I am with you consoles me. For you I am a priest. With you I am a Christian.
