We start today the first letter that St. Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth. They were his problem children and most of the letter consists of fussing with them. However, he starts off the letter with words of praise and thanksgiving. “I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way.” This is not simply buttering them up before dropping the hammer. Rather it is a reminder of who they already are — the blessed of God. The rest of the letter is about who they are called to become. In our prayer today we should give thanks that we are the children of God.
