In our society we tend to value the worth of something or someone by their accomplishments. He got this degree, she has a good job, that church is growing, they hoisted the championship trophy. But St. Paul has a different metric, “the message of the cross” which, to our way of thinking, “is foolishness.” What the Apostle wants us to understand is that we really don’t accomplish anything on our own. God is the one who makes it all possible. We don’t take a breath, we can’t put two feet on the ground without God. The cross demonstrates that whatever we have done is only possible through the grace and power of God. For that reason, “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.”
