Joseph, Mary and Jesus were refugees. They fled from a dangerous situation in their own country to find a safe haven. In this they are no different from refugees fleeing from a civil war in Syria or a regime of gang terror in El Salvador. (And, there is no mention in the gospels that St. Joseph took the time to wait for the proper documents before bringing his family to safety.) For Christians, therefore, caring about and caring for the immigrants and refugees in our midst is not some kind of do-good-ism or bleeding heart liberalism. It is our way of showing solidarity with the plight of the Holy Family. Whatsoever you do for today’s immigrants you are doing for Joseph and Mary and Jesus.
