“Why does this generation seek a sign?” Jesus asked. It should not have been a surprise to him that people sought a sign. There is a natural human tendency to look for the sure thing. In a world where you feel like people are kidding themselves or kidding you, how do you spot the genuine article? Maybe Jesus’ question really has to do with what kind of sign that people seek. We look for the unusual, the dramatic sign when, in fact, most often the divine sign is found by breaking open the ordinary. Jesus himself was the sign from God but his contemporaries found it hard to believe that God could be “one of us” in a person who was just like them.
