Our usual picture of Jesus is as the great preacher, the miracle worker, the one acting with authority. While all of that is true it can tend to distance Jesus from us, to put him on a pedestal so far above us. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews offers a corrective to that image of Jesus. He had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way. In other words, since Jesus is like us, he experienced doubt and fear and insecurity and confusion. Which is why St. Mark, and all of the evangelists, depict Jesus as spending time in prayer. He needed to re-ground himself in the love of God the Father when we was feeling lost and alone. So, yes, let us confess Jesus as our mighty Lord but let us also remember he is our elder brother who joins with us when we bring out weary hearts to God in prayer as he did.
