Nature was the catechism that Jesus used. He found God in the everyday life of people, in what they did and what they saw. He strove to teach in a vocabulary that people could relate to. As Catholics we often have very sophisticated explanations for the things of God. Transubstantiation! But I wonder if we might be better served to go back to the method of Jesus and explain the presence and action of God in simpler metaphors and examples. Too often the catechism provides answers to questions that people aren’t even asking. If we focus instead on the common and ordinary experiences that people have God can become more real to them, more of an active presence in their hearts and homes.
