In St. John’s Gospel the first words spoken by Jesus are a question: “What are you looking for?” That question, of course, echoes in each human heart. I’m looking for love, looking for peace, looking for a home, looking for forgiveness. A different answer for each one of us. And despite the seemingly infinite variety of possibilities in the modern world, the contemporary theme song might be the one by U2 with the refrain: “And I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” We do find what we’re looking for when we heed the invitation of Jesus: “Come and see.” Come and see that in his person, in his incarnate presence we find the answer to all of the aches and fears of the human heart.
