The founder of my religious community had as his motto: every Catholic is called to be an apostle. Pope Francis says something similar when he says there is a universal call to be missionary disciples. For most Catholics the idea of being an apostle, being a missionary, seems beyond them. They know their faults and failings and feel intimidated at the thought of sharing the faith with others. Won’t that make them a hypocrite? That feeling is pretty universal. Take the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips.” God responds to Isaiah, and to us, by touching us with the divine spark so it is not ourselves we share but God within us.
