The Ten Commandments contain this admonition: “You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves.” Whew, you can think, I might have trouble with some of the commandments but at least I am not an idol carver. Israel’s neighbors had idols. In fact, one of the ways a conquering nation showed its superiority was by carrying of the image of the god of their defeated rival. They proved they were in control. God does not want any “graven image” so that Israel will have no illusions that they are in control of God. God’s will is what matters in Israel, not theirs. We might not be carving images but we do attempt to get God to do our will.
