“If you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest.” Jesus lived in an agricultural society and used images that people could relate to. The parable of the sower made sense to them. The image of weeds and wheat growing up in the same field was something they had witnessed. Even those in an urban society understand what it means that our hearts contain both the wheat of God’s word and the weeds of selfishness. Our Lord suggests that discerning what is selfishness and what is legitimate self-esteem requires the perspective of eternity. Knowing that, we strive as best we can to make our one desire and choice always and only to do God’s will.
