Jerusalem had been saved by God from the invader during the time of Isaiah. They were counting on the same thing a century or so later when Jeremiah was the prophet. He warned them. Put not your trust in the deceitful words: “This is the temple of the LORD! The temple of the LORD! The temple of the LORD!” Instead, the prophet insisted God expected the people to “thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds,” to act with justice and live in peace. The temptation to rely on old solutions to current problems is a perennial one. Some Church people imagine that going back to old liturgical styles will cure all current ills. Jeremiah would say “No, justice and peace are what God expects.”
