Back in the day the nuns would urge us to give a “spiritual bouquet” to someone on special occasions. We would make up a card where we would list all of the masses, communions, rosaries, prayers, etc. that we would offer for that individual. When I heard the words of Jesus, “store up treasures in heaven” I thought that heavenly treasure would pile up if I did more and more stuff like prayers and masses. But a different thought occurred when I saw a bumper sticker “Jersey Girls don’t pump gas.” (In New Jersey only the attendant can operate the gas pumps.) It struck me that it wasn’t my efforts that produced spiritual benefits but God’s grace and mercy being “pumped” into my life simply because God is so good.
