Jesus was not reluctant to supplement the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament with some commandments of his own. The Sermon on the Mount contains several of Jesus’ commandments; for example, “Thou shalt not worry.” Several times in Matthew 6 Jesus hammers home the point. “Stop worrying about tomorrow.” Obeying that commandment runs clean counter to all that we are taught as being what a responsible adult does. The entire insurance industry exists because we are worried about what tomorrow might bring. Our Lord wants us to understand that we need to get over our illusion of being in control. No matter how carefully we plan, how much we worry, things happen outside of our control. Jesus invites us to trust that God will never abandon us no matter how things seem to be going.
