The scene of Elisha picking up the mantle of Elijah and continuing his mission is a powerful one that has continuing relevance. When we look at past generations we are impressed with their accomplishments — the renewal of the Church in the post-Vatican II era, the civil rights movement, the progress in medicine, etc. But like Elisha we cannot simply be impressed with what has been done. Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.” We are called to build on the past to promote God’s future. “You have asked something that is not easy,” Elijah replied. It might not be easy but the gospel demands no less than that we work to protect the environment, eliminate racism, welcome the immigrant, eradicate poverty.
