The Golden Rule is a common sense commandment that can be found in most cultures. To understand it properly it would help to append to the original saying: “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you” if you were in their circumstance. When Marie Antoinette infamously said “let them eat cake” she might have been insensitive but she wasn’t heartless. She was simply thinking in terms of what she would do in her circumstance. Only by walking in the shoes of another, seeing things from their perspective will we truly understand how we are to “do unto others” in a way that fulfills the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule should be a part of our political, economic and social decision making.
