Saints Peter and Paul are rightly viewed as the pivotal figures among the early followers of Jesus. They nurtured the Jesus movement from a small Jewish sect into a world wide Church. Of all their contemporaries they are the ones we know best. They come across as fully human characters with all of the strengths and all of the weaknesses that mark our species. That God chose the likes of them to be the foundational figures of the Church should give us hope. If individuals full of faults and failings could, despite that, be used by God for such a vital role in bringing Good News into the world, so can we. God calls us as we are to spread divine love in the world.
