All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness. When St. Paul instructs his young apprentice Timothy that Sacred Scripture gives the wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus he is referring to the only Scripture he knew, the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament. Of course this was the only Scripture that Jesus and Mary and Peter and all the rest knew as well. The New Testament was not formed until after that first generation was gone. For the Apostle, it was the Hebrew Bible which led to faith in Christ Jesus. Plunging into the Old Testament might seem daunting but the rewards to growing in the faith are enormous.
