Someone asked me on Sunday, “why poor in spirit? Don’t we want to be rich in Spirit, to be full of Spirit?” Since the first of the Beatitudes of Jesus proclaims a blessing in being poor in spirit the question is an important one. I was reminded of the story Jesus told of the Pharisee and the Publican. The Pharisee was certainly full of something but the Publican was praised for knowing his emptiness and his need of God’s grace and mercy. The Publican exemplifies being poor in spirit, knowing that we have to create an empty part of ourselves in order to provide a place for God to shower blessings upon us.
