When I was a young priest there was a song popular in church with the refrain: “You are the light of the world. Let you light shine before all. So they may see the good that you do and give glory to God.” Someone in the parish objected to the song. He wanted to substitute “so they may see salvation in Christ” instead of seeing the good that we do. But the original is a better reflection of Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount. People really do need to see “the good that we do” in order to see what salvation in Christ is all about. We bring God into the world by our acts of kindness, generosity, forgiveness, compassion, love.
