The Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver is a service and social international organization. At St. James, the chapter meets monthly. The organization was founded more than 100 years ago primarily to serve Catholic men and women of color. Its membership is open to any parishioner interested in its mission. Claverism began at James Catholic Church, 2942 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Illinois on April 17, 1955. Knight John Woodford of Council 82 – Corpus Christi Church, was instrumental in influencing Cecil Sturgis to introduce Claverism to St. James Church. Grand Knight Sturgis established Claverism at St. James Catholic Church and led Council No. 129 until his death in 1972. As one of the first Black Engineers hired by the Chicago Public Schools and a pillar in his community, a Chicago Public School was named in his memory. On May 13, 1956, St James Court No. 129, was established in Chicago and has been a beacon of light in the church and community for more than 51 consecutive years. Grand Knight Cecil Sturgis played a strong role in the organization of this Court and under his leadership, the first twelve women were chosen for membership.
