For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice. This was one of Jesus’ favorite Bible quotes! It is also a constant challenge for the Church. A few years ago there was a priest meeting where the topic of destination weddings came up. Should there be some accomodation made for those who want to get married outside of the church building? Many of the priests were adamantly opposed. Marriage is a sacrament and the holiness of the event is highlighted by holding the ceremony in a sacred precinct. The bishop pushed back. Many young adults have been away from the Church for years. They approach a priest because they have some notion, however vague, that God should be part of their marriage. If the first word they hear after reaching out to the Church is “NO,” — no, you have to do it this way, not your way — what are the chances of them ever approaching the Church again?
