Some wag called it “wooden beam in the eye disease” — the tendency we have as humans to see clearly the faults of others but be blind to our own. If we want to see ourselves or others clearly, Jesus says, look to the “fruits.” Who is the one bringing peace and joy to others? “A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good.” We find there are people of every race, language and creed that produce good. We need the kind of sight that produces insight into the heart of another — for every person is precious in the eyes of God and capable of goodness. Maybe a good Lenten practice would be to look for the good that people are doing instead of noticing the faults.
