One implication of the words of the prophet Isaiah is that the end result of our Lenten practices is that we become a “repairer of the breach.” What an important role at this time when breaches are everywhere — caused by racism, by xenophobia, by income disparity, by NIMBY attitudes, by plain old fear. One becomes a “repairer of the breach” by building trust. If the “other” trusts that you are interested in the common good, then a way forward can be found. In other words, as Isaiah points out, to be a “repairer of the breach” requires “not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or speaking with malice.” At the end of Lent let us be able to say “we” and not just “me.”
