Jesus said, “This generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” The story of Jonah is a story of repentance, of conversion, of a change of life. That sign people of the twenty-first century need to see as well. How important to remember that the Church itself is a sign, a sign of the kingdom. The Church does not exist for itself but as a pointer to the kingdom of peace, compassion, forgiveness, generosity, love that Jesus proclaimed. As we continue in our Lenten journey let us examine ourselves, and our churches, to make sure that we are going through a conversion process which focuses on how well we are reaching out to those who are hurting.
