Among the first things Pope Francis did upon his election was to confess himself a sinner. With that starting point he could admit his need for the help of God to become better. The people of Nazareth were not willing to do that. When Jesus pointed out their past faults and failings they accused him of being part of the cancel culture and wanted to get rid of him. For some reason we as individuals and as a nation resist that starting point. We become complacent about where we are and miss the call to conversion. “I’m okay and you’re okay,” according to one pop psychologist. On the national level the inability to confront our sinfulness as a nation inhibits our ability to become better.
