The Bible gives us many images of God: King of Kings, Lord of Lords. Since I don’t know many kings or lords that is not really a helpful image of God for me. Even the more beloved images, like the Good Shepherd, don’t really connect with my experience since I don’t run into shepherds very often. That is my the image of God as mother which the prophet Isaiah gives us or the image of God as Father so common in the words of Jesus seem to work better in helping me to come to understand what God is like. Maybe in our prayer today we can reflect on how imagine God to be — seated as a king on a high and lofty throne or as a mother holding her child to her breast.
