St. John ends his account of the Last Supper with Jesus saying a long prayer — scholars call it the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. In this prayer Jesus prays for his disciples which, of course, includes us. Two lessons: first, how consoled we should be that we have powerful intercessors who are praying for us. Beginning with Jesus, down through May and the Saints, and ending with our own family and friends we have those who are imploring God on our behalf. The second lesson: how good it is for us to offer prayers for others. In imitation of Jesus, we too should lift up to the throne of grace those who are woven into our lives.
