The conversion of St. Paul was a major turning point in the life of the early Church. It was so important that the story is told three times in the Acts of the Apostles. The fascinating thing about the story was what prompted his conversion. It was not the blinding vision or the heavenly voice. The story makes clear that Saul became Paul when he recognized Jesus in the faces of those whom he was persecuting. That is our story as well. Our conversion to a closer following of Christ does not depend on a mountaintop experience but happens when we see his face in those we feel estranged from, we are alienated from, those who look or think or act differently than we do.
