The readings assigned for this day can be considered valedictory addresses: St. Paul’s farewell to the Ephesians and Jesus’ farewell to his apostles. Both Paul and Jesus warn that after they are gone things will get hard — the “savage wolves” will attack the church at Ephesus and the “Evil One” will assail the followers of Jesus. These stories remind us of the times we have gone through transitions — a new job, moving, a child leaving home, retirement, growing weakness in our bodies. There might not be savage wolves but our transitions are difficult as well. We must, therefore, heed the message of the Apostle and Our Lord that God will be with us even in the most difficult of transitions.
