“Someone will lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus offered that prediction to St. Peter but not much prophetic insight lies behind that prediction. It is a common human experience. When we are young and full of spit and vinegar we imagine that our choices will be what determines our life. Reality proves to be a bit different. We are often taken where we would rather not go — we lose a job, a relationship fails, sickness intervenes. And, of course, ultimately as we age we are led into an increasing diminishment of our bodily strength. Jesus’ last command to Peter is like his first one: “Follow me.” That serves as a great reminder that no matter what our circumstance — either on top of our game or dealing with loss — we are still called to follow Jesus.
