Ordinary time. After the forty days of Lent and fifty days of Easter we move into ordinary time. Since most of our lives are ordinary time there is a great spiritual benefit to be gained. The readings assigned to each day are part of the “continuous reading” of the Bible — going through the Bible chapter by chapter each day. During this week the lessons are from the epistle of St. James and the Gospel of Mark. What a great “ordinary time” prayer is found in the gospel: “I do believe; help my unbelief.” Yes, we are people of faith but when the nights are long, loneliness bites, grief overwhelms, confusion reigns, resentment builds, sickness frightens unbelief creeps into the room. I do believe, Lord, help me to cope with the thoughts and feelings that cause unbelief to raise its ugly head.
