I knew of a situation when I was in New Jersey. A building contractor used undocumented immigrants for his projects. He would pay them every week — except for the last week of work. When the local priest went to ask him about this the contractor explained that was how he made his profit. The priest was incredulous — “You make your profit by stealing the labor of these poor men who work on your building projects?” There is nothing new under the sun. In chapter 5 of the epistle of St. James we read: “Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers are crying aloud; and the cries of the workers have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.” Work place justice is a Biblical story and it is current events.
