How fitting that in these days before Mother’s Day in the US that the daily gospel reading is taken from John 16 where Jesus uses the image of a mother giving birth to describe the life of Christians in the world. Reflection on the experience of women has been one of the great advances in theology in recent decades. There might be a special providence as well that the Acts reading tells of St. Paul bringing Priscilla and Aquila to Antioch to meet the other Church leaders. St. Luke does not tell us why Paul did so — but perhaps it was to confirm with the ones he calls the “super apostles” that the Church in Corinth would be led by a husband and wife team. Our own reflection today might be on how God is asking us to imagine new ways of bringing the Gospel into our world.
