Seemingly from out of nowhere, St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles talks about a preacher named Apollos. While he is portrayed as an effective speaker, his formation in the faith seems to have been lacking. But St. Paul does not shut him down, but rather works with him to deepen his understanding of the faith. I wonder if this isn’t a model which we could use today. Those who are “licensed” to preach are the ones — priests and deacons — who have the proper theological background. Unfortunately, as many Catholics can testify, while they know theology, they don’t know how to speak effectively. Let’s find some people with the giftedness to speak with zeal and enthusiasm and then make sure they are well catechized before sending them out to preach.
