“There broke out a severe persecution of the Church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered.” You can only imagine how those first followers of Jesus experienced this persecution. They no doubt thought it was a terrible tragedy. They were probably crying out to God about why this was happening to them — weren’t they following God’s will? They surely feared Saul who was imprisoning them. However, it was that very persecution that prompted the growth of the Church. Before, they had been a small group centered in Jerusalem; after, they moved into Samaria, into Africa, into Syria, into Greece and eventually to Rome itself. No matter how things seem to be going God is not finished. God can transform even seeming tragedies for some good end.
