In a business book, Good to Great Jim Collins gives suggestions on how to make your company great. The first step is to get and keep the right people — and you do so by incentivizing them with high salaries and bonuses. He was challenged by those in the non-profit sector that those incentives don’t work in their world. Collins said to incentivize there with recognition and honors. How does that fit in with the word of Jesus: “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'” Christians aren’t kind, forgiving, generous, compassionate, loving in order to get some recognition. We do it because that is how the people of God act.
