“‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” This passage from the Book of Revelation inspired a painting by William Hunt entitled “The Light of the World.” The painting depicts Jesus knocking on a door holding a lamp. The door looks rusty with weeds growing out if it, like it hasn’t been opened much. The interesting feature is that there is no door knob on the outside of the door. It can only be opened from the inside. The lesson is the one embodied in the story of Zacchaeus in Luke’s Gospel. Jesus invites but does not force. It is up to us to open the door and welcome Jesus in as Zacchaeus did. When we do so we will also have a heart for the poor and the victims of injustice as Zaccheaus did!
