Both St. Matthew and St. Luke record what is known as the parable of the talents — three men are given something to invest and are judged by how well they did. Luke situtates his version in current events with the parable providing commentary on what is happening politically. The background (short version): when King Herod died one of his sons, in the face of opposition, went to Rome to get Caesar to confirm his right to succeed him. When we was granted rule he returned to Jerusalem and did pay back those opposed to his rule. “As for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me.’” This serves as a reminder that the life of faith is lived in the world. Since God thought it important enough to share human existence it is in the realm of human affairs that we will find God. The gifts God has given us are meant to build up the kingdom of God.
