Have among yourselves the same attitude that is in Christ Jesus, Who did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself. These words of St. Paul, apparently quoting from a Christian hymn, give a succinct way of evaluating how we are doing. Are we about grasping, Adam-like, looking out for ourselves? Or are we about emptying, Jesus-like, giving of ourselves to care of others? New born babies are grasping because they cannot take care of themselves. Parents about about emptying because they care about their child. We can measure of our spiritual maturity by seeing how much we concentrate our what we want or what we need in contrast to doing what we can to care for what others need.
