On the Church’s calendar this day we celebrate the Dedication of the St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome. This is the cathedral church of Rome (St. Peter’s is technically in another country, Vatican City) and hence the seat of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. St. Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, hammers at the theme that whatever building we worship in is meant to form us as the people of God. “You are God’s building.” “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” And “the temple of God, which you are, is holy.” Let us by our care for one another embody the sacred presence of God in our midst.
